Two-hour battle sees ex-Junior US Open runner-up reach final

Denis Kudla, who accounted for British star Dan Evans in their quarter-final showdown, edged past Kamil Majchrzak in a tense third set tiebreak to earn a final berth.

The Ukraine-born US citizen, who has never cracked the world’s top 50 despite his impressive run to the 4th Round at 2015 Wimbledon, registered a 6-4 1-6 7-6(8) triumph.

An uneventful opening set was a 34-minute battle of attrition, with the no.6 seed finally taking command at the net when a break of serve was needed.

However, Polish ace Majchrzak stormed away with the second set in 35 gruelling minutes with the scoreline not a true reflection of the closeness in their baseline battle.

With both players finding their rhythm in a lengthy and cautiously played decisive set, it came as no surprise that the victor would be determined on a tiebreak.

Even the tiebreak was closely fought, with long rallies and the safety of percent tennis taking precedent over the earlier wild hits by each player in the opening two sets.

But Kudla, the 2010 Junior US Open runner-up, clipped the no.8 seed after an hour 8-6 to seal a final spot against compatriot Frances Tiafoe.
